Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, passed away as a young child, forcing her mother to support the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime and drama, however no theater opportunities were offered. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. Earned money working during the day in the ushering department. She took classes in drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
